At the center of our practice is a commitment to wellness. It is our intent to help each of our patients enjoy the highest quality of life possible. We promote wellness by addressing dental needs with the most conservative procedures and the most appropriate materials.
Our methods of treating patients are based on biological principles. When a tooth requires repair, our goal is to restore structure in a way that closely resembles what nature intended. Drs. Imam and Khan work with patients on an individual basis, getting to know their unique needs and formulating a plan to meet them without compromising overall health.
The desire for biocompatible dentistry is one of the reasons that patients visit the Maine Center for Dental Medicine. Here, treatments such as tooth replacement may involve metal-free prosthetics such as zirconia dental implants.
Standard dental implants are titanium posts. Historically, titanium has been viewed as biocompatible due to its use in medical implantation procedures. Research has demonstrated that there is a risk for reactivity to metal anywhere in the body, including the mouth. For this reason, patients seeking dental implants can consider the value of low-risk zirconium.
Zirconium is derived from ceramic. This makes the substance hypoallergenic, or unlikely to elicit a reactive response from the immune system. Because zirconium does not have the same effect on the body as metal, it is ideal for anyone with a metal allergy. Additionally, the metal-free implant is not as susceptible to corrosion from the natural acidity of the mouth.
One of the primary reasons that implants were initially developed with titanium is that this material is regarded for its mechanical strength. However, advances have made it possible to meet the need for stability and comfort without relying on potentially reactive materials.
