Located in Skowhegan, Maine, Drs. Imam and Khan of Maine Center for Dental Medicine practice biological dentistry that first does no harm. Biological Dentists focus on the health of the whole patient, beginning with the oral cavity and how its health impacts the rest of the body. Technology and procedures are chosen for their effects on patient health and safety. One such method includes the use of ozone therapy to safely cleanse and disinfect root canals during dental treatments.

What is ozone?

Ozone is a naturally occurring gas already produced by our bodies’ immune systems. When used in low doses, ozone is safe. It produces no side effects and has no contraindications for use in dental procedures. Ozone is powerful antimicrobial, safe and effective at destroying bacteria.

Ozone may be used in water or gas form. Its benefits include:
● Irrigating a surgical site
● Cleansing teeth and gums to destroy bacteria
● Increasing circulation and oxygenation
● Increasing the body’s natural response to fight infection
● Naturally occurring, so there are no adverse reactions

Ozone as used in root canal therapy

There are times when a root canal is an effective treatment if all aspects of the tooth are considered. Our practice uses diagnostic imaging to see the internal structures of the tooth. Dentinal tubules are small, expansive canals that spread deep from the root to other areas of the mouth. During a traditional root canal, these tubules cannot be adequately cleansed, meaning infection may remain in the mouth. We use ozone to eliminate bacteria throughout the tooth including the tubules. In gas form, ozone can permeate areas that typically cannot be accessed. Once sealed, the tooth has been efficiently disinfected.
